My upbriging was heavily influence by genxers, it was throuh them that I was introduced to manga/anime.Like most kids of the 90s, I too accidentally put in a tape thinking it was DBZ only to be shocked by hentai. Every video store had at least one asshole who would switch tape labels to trick people into renting the wrong copy
Personally, I love anime, though these days I do not use the self identifier 'otaku'.I'm simply passionate because I got started in my early childhood. My mother and I would watch magical girl series like Cardcaptor, Magic Knight Rayearth and Sailor Moon together.
Dragon Ball was a huge phenomenon in the 90s, people would gather to catch new episodes. Between that and YuYu Hakusho it was hard not to be a fan of Shounen series.
Since streaming was not yet a thing, I got my fix by visiting SunCoast, Borders and local Video Stores and bookshops since they often carried selected titles.
Taping was also a popular method of obtaining episodes for rewatch. By connecting a VCR to the TV one could record whatever was being aired by inserting a blank tape into the VCR and hitting the record button. Like a retro form of 'screen recording'. Home recorded anime tapes can be found for sale on the internet. The closest we had to 'streaming' was TIVO which introduced 'live pausing/rewinding', a format which is now how we most commonly consume media. It was a step ahead from standard VCR taping because tapes were not needed, the copies of programs were all 'digital'. However, rewatch capability was limited and content would be deleted after a certain date.
In the early 90s, Syfy (then sci-fi) premiere a 'Saturday anime' block; it was controversial due to the amount of mature series aired. α΄α΄α΄‘α΄Κα΄
